Today’s Question: I am overweight; can I qualify for Life Insurance?

The short answer is yes, you can qualify for Life Insurance. The long answer is, you have to find a plan what best suits your current situation. You must determine if a fully underwritten plan, where they do a full series of questions and some medical tests is a good route, or if a simplified issue plan, where there is still a full series of questions, but no medical tests is a good route.

With a fully underwritten plan, you are going to want to look at doing a preliminary insurance inquiry. This is where the broker can email the insurance company and find out if you are likely to qualify or if you are going to get rated or declined. If is looks as if you will get declined, then your options are limited.

With a simplified issue plan, there are no medical tests and a short series of health questions. Ergo, you will most definitely qualify for a simplified issue plan, however, keep in mind you are going to want to apply for the plan you can answer no to the most possible questions. This will result in you getting the best rate and the best amount of coverage for your needs.

If you are unsure about what policy works best, be sure to communicate with a broker who is familiar with all the different companies and policies, so you can get the best coverage for your individual needs.
