what has a bigger factor on insurance premiums weight or smoking?

Both factors influence premium. But it is very possible to be overweight and get standard life insurance rates. Insurance companies have pretty generous build tables for their underwriting especially if you have no other health issues.

A male 5″11 and 250 pounds could get standard rates if he has no other health issues. Whereas a healthy smoker all things being equal pays a much higher rate than a non smoker.
