Doctors demand action
The skinny on life insurance
and plastic surgery.

According to the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, Canada is 15th most popular place in the world for getting cosmetic surgery with 108,758 procedures done in this country. With that in mind, we decided to do an analysis of how these procedures can impact an applicant’s insurability.

We surveyed five companies, but unfortunately none would give definitive answers, since all tradition life insurance applications must be fully underwritten.

When the companies did talk, most indicated that applicants going for cosmetic surgery such as breast enlargement, lip enhancements, or other cosmetic procedures, such as botox will still qualify for standard rates. However, these surgeries are treated as most other surgeries in that the insurance company may postpone making a decision for a pending surgery. Typically, they will postpone the decision until after the surgery is completed.

Cosmetic treatments combined with other mental or nervous disorders may pose an additional risk and this could cause the applicant to receive a rated premium or be declined outright.

Yes, I do believe that health insurance companies will not cover cosmetic surgery costs. I think people really need to look at the fine print when it comes to insurance, especially those who have had surgeries in the past.

Unfortunately including cosmetic surgeries in a comppnies group benefit cost would simply cause too big a jump in group premiums

What type of cosmetic surgery are covered by your insurance? I think most people who would like to undergo this type of operation are afraid that their insurance might not cover their surgery.
