Health, Dental and Life Insurance in One Package from the Canadian Freelancer Union

Recently, we've been taking a look at the three insurance plans offered to the members of the Canadian Freelance Union, a division of the Communication, Energy and Paperworkers Union (Local 2040). Underwritten by ABC Insurance Services Ltd. and Greenshield Canada, we take a look at the benefits, advantages and disadvantages at the second plan offered -- Value Plus.

• The prescription drug coverage maximum is $800 and oral contraceptives are covered in addition to prescription drugs.
• Vision care also includes eye exams up to $50 every 24 months.
• Professional services (speech therapist, chiropractor etc.) carry a 90% expense maximum up to a total of $400.
• Hearing aid replacement and repairs at a $400 maximum every four years.
• Private duty nursing carries a $3,000/year maximum
• Medical items (wheelchairs, crutches, etc.) $1,500/year maximum
• Semi-private hospital room at a maximum of $200/day, 25 days/year
• Out of country/province medical coverage is at $500,000/lifetime, but it must be up to 30 days of emergency treatment. There are no pre-existing exclusions, but you must be under 79.
• The dental plan combined maximum per person is $500 in the first year, $750 in the next and $1,000 every year following the second one. 80% of your expenses are covered, up to the limits above.
• A $15,000 life insurance benefit is available to applicants under 65.
• $15,000 in accidental death coverage is also available to applicants under age 65.

Advantages:

1. A semi-private hospital room feature is built-in
2. There is built-in out of province/country medical coverage.

Disadvantages:

1. The minimal life insurance benefit ($15,000)
2. The first-year dental benefit ($500) is very limited.
